Description
This image captures a newly emerged cicada from its exoskeleton, and shows its fragile new wings before they harden off. Males have a mostly hollow abdomen and they use it as a resonating chamber to create the distinctively loud love song they use to attract mates. Cicadas emerge from the ground every 13 or 17 years. Symbolism associated with cicadas include immortality and re-birth. Photo credit Karen Varnas, KarenZPhotography.com. Stoneworks Imagery Outdoor Sports and Nature Collection photograph number NAT-031.
